The story of Phil – from Australia with love… Or, how a little love can go a long way!

Most good things in C4C´s office usually start with a phone call, or these days via a message on social media. Phil contacted us two months ago and expressed his desire to help some hard-pressed children in orphanages by baking delicious pies, Australian style, for them to cheer them up during these difficult days of lockdown and restricted movement.

Currently not working as much because of Covid, Phil said he wanted to spend his free time by doing something valuable and meaningful. After exploring the possibilities, we came up with the plan of taking the cakes to the Klokanek orphanage in Prague Hostivice. Phil is from Australia and the name Klokanek( kangaroo) rang a bell with him, as it reminded him of his homeland… 😉

After a thumbs up from the orphanage, Phil took his pies there every Saturday, much to the delight of the appreciative kids and the staff. At first, because of the Covid restrictions, he just delivered the pies (and some buckets of ice cream) to the Klokanek staff, but on Saturday he got to meet the kids themselves for the first time!

He said that it was great to see their faces when he pulled out the cakes and ice cream. Ecstasy!

Here´s Phil´s account of the story:

“I remember when I was a kid growing up back in Australia. My brother and I were lucky because my mum was a great cook and loved to bake all sorts of cakes and dessert pies for the family. Now that I’m older I realize how fortunate we were, and how different it must be not to have parents who are always ready to provide nice things like these food treats.

My job in Prague involves baking, so I decided it might be nice to try and help out some of the orphaned children here by making them some cakes and other things, that the people who look after them don’t have the budget to always be able to provide. The orphanage I take my cakes, etc. to, is Klokanek in Hostivice, but there are plenty of kids in other orphanages that I’m sure would appreciate it if other people could maybe find time to do the same thing for them. I can’t think of too many things better than putting a big smile on a kid’s face.”

What a wonderful story of kindness and caring! It’s great to see that people are thinking of others, even more so during this difficult time of Corona. I am hoping that more people will come forward and will join Phil in this kind effort, providing what they are able to.

Please don’t be shy and contact us if you are thinking of joining our club of people doing good deeds. Orphaned children and the staff alike are currently under lots of pressure, and they can use all the help we can come up with.

And this is what Hana Kupkova, director of Klokánek Hostivice, had to say about Phil:

I would like to thank Phil very much for thinking of our children in this way. The children are always looking forward to his visit and they REALLY like his goodies. Phil is always full of positive energy, which he can pass on not only to children but also to the staff here in Klokanek. A big thank you goes to Mr. Phil, who, as an Australian already belongs tour Kangaroo family! Thank you C4C for your support and caring!”

We really need more Phils, folks! Are you up to the job?
