A Smile Knows No Borders: Czech and Polish Clowns Join Forces in Opole

12.10.2026

Four days of laughter, learning and shared experiences brought together C4C’s Dr. Clown team and their Polish colleagues in Opole, Poland, proving once again that a smile needs no translation.

Our Czech clowns travelled to Poland for three international workshops organized together with the Polish Dr. Clown Foundation. But this was about much more than training. Alongside workshops on improvisation, body language, empathy and emotional awareness, the teams put their newly shared skills into practice, visiting two children’s hospitals and a retirement home.

The greatest lesson? Every person is different.

A hospital clown cannot simply walk into a room and deliver a rehearsed performance. A frightened child, a lonely senior or someone having a difficult day each needs something different.

The real art lies in sensing the mood, listening and responding to the person in front of you.

As one of the participants put it:

“Sometimes the most important thing is not making someone laugh. It’s simply making them feel that, for a moment, someone is there just for them.”

And what happens when Czech and Polish clowns meet patients and residents without sharing a common language? Quite often, even more laughter!

Gestures, expressions, playful improvisation and the occasional linguistic misunderstanding created spontaneous moments of comedy. The language barrier turned out to be no barrier to joy at all.

The head of the Polish project was delighted by how naturally the two teams worked together:

“It was wonderful to see how quickly our Czech and Polish colleagues connected. We may speak different languages, but we understand the same language of kindness and laughter.”

Our team returned home with fresh ideas, new inspiration and valuable experiences to bring into their everyday work.

Because being a hospital clown is about much more than a red nose and a funny joke. It is about empathy, human connection and knowing when a smile, a little mischief or simply a quiet moment can make all the difference.

A big thank-you to our Polish friends at the Dr. Clown Foundation for their warm welcome. We look forward to the next meeting – wherever laughter takes us!
